Slice

I was lost in thought walking along Emerald Avenue one Saturday afternoon, holding a leftover slice of pizza wrapped in plastic on one hand, when an old woman came rushing up to me.

She had on a toothless smile and cupped her right hand. I was taken aback but realized a split-second later that she was begging for the pizza.

I handed her the food. She thanked me in English and hurriedly walked away. I smiled and continued walking.

A few seconds later, before I turned the corner, I looked back and there she was sitting on the bottom of the stairs to one of the high-rise buildings, munching on the single slice of pizza.

Nothing still beats helping out someone other than your own kin. Who could not repay you with anything but a grateful smile and a thank you.
