Scud at the Movies : Part IV

The Fly. David cronenberg’s cult hit about a scientist (Jeff Goldblum) who invents a transport machine with disastrous consequences. I liked the movie’s morbid premise of a man becoming a “fly monster” and his downward spiral to permanent insanity. This movie is not for everyone.

Eagle-Eye. Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan star in ths ultra hyper-kinetic movie about two people forced to destroy (or save) their country. I enjoyed the movie although this should not be taken seriously since the premise is a mish-mash of movies previously released like the superb Steven spielberg-Tom Cruise collaboration Minority Report and Bruce Willis starrer Die Hard 4.
Youth Without Youth. Francis Ford Coppola’s latest film about an old man (Tim Roth) who is stricken by lightning, survives and recovers a few decades younger. He then continues his
lifelong quest to document the most ancient of languages. This is just an above-average movie for me and the real treat here is Tim Roth’s tragic character.

Tropic Thunder. Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr star in this hilarious parody of movie stars and Hollywood filmmaking. Tom cruise also stars as an aging, big-bellied Hollywood producer. It’s refreshng to see him in a rubber suit and doing comedy. Go watch this with your friends but be warned – Downey’s accent is hard to decipher and might ruin the experience. But then again there are other funny scenes so just chill, relax, and go with the flow.

West Side Story. As I wrote in a previous post, I watched this movie in preparation for the play that I had tickets to. The verdict: not great but not bad either. This movie is a musical version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet sans the warring clans, the swords, and the poison as means for the tragic end.
